Project Description:

The Green Trail is the parks most popular as it winds for three miles through an exceptional variety of habitats including hardwood forests, freshwater wetlands, white cedar swamps, pine barrens and next to a salt marsh. Decades of use have worn down many areas of the trail into dangerous gullies of slippery mud. Volunteers will be hero’s as they will work to construct water diversion bars and spread quarry gravel over the gullies. This will create a safe trail for the hikers and protect the forest floor wildflowers that are now getting stepped on as people avoid the gullies by walking to the side of them.

Meet your Crew Leader, HERE.

Hosting Organization:New Jersey State Parks
Area and Attractions:Recently celebrating its 75th anniversary, Cheesequake State Park is a special place, boasting an exceptional variety of natural habitats and recreational facilities, while being just 30 miles from New York City. The name Cheesequake is derived from a sub-tribe of the Lenne Lenape natives who hunted and fished in the area over 5,000 years before English colonist came. The work area is on the Green Trail, which was recently listed at the best hiking trail in NJ. Join us for this gem of a project in Jersey!
Accommodations:Car Camping Tent Sites
Accommodations Description and Gear Needs:Volunteers will stay in the parks group campground which offers picnic tables, a fire ring, lantern pole and indoor toilets, plus showers nearby next to the swimming lake. The park will provide group cooking gear. Volunteers should bring their own tent, sleeping bag, pad, eating utensils/bowl, and personal items.
Climate:Average June temperatures at Cheesequake are 75 degrees with highs of 78 and lows of 65. We are at full leaf out by June and just past the peak spring bird migration. Because half of the Park goes under water twice a day with the high tide in the salt marsh, we can be a bit 'buggy' on calm days. Pack some skin-so-soft bug screen to solve that problem.
